California drinks more Scotch than any other state, and it drinks it differently than the rest of the country. Los Angeles built a cocktail scene that put smoky Islay malts into drinks nobody in Scotland would recognise. San Francisco has been a single-malt town since long before the current boom. San Diego and Orange County lean blended and long, over ice, on a patio, most of the year.

Start here: the three questions that narrow it down

Smoke or no smoke? This is the only question that really matters. Peated whisky — mostly from Islay — tastes of woodsmoke, iodine and campfire. People tend to love it or refuse it, and there is very little middle ground. If you have never had it, buy a smoky bottle and an unsmoky one and find out where you sit.

Blend or single malt? A blended Scotch mixes malt whisky with lighter grain whisky from several distilleries. A single malt is 100% malted barley from one distillery. Neat or in a drink? A $25 blend is a better highball than a $130 single malt, and nobody should feel bad about that.

Unpeated single malts: the California default

If you are buying a first single malt, start here. The Glenlivet Scotch 12 Yr. ($75.09) is the Speyside benchmark — apple, pear, light honey, no smoke at all — and remains the most reliable "does this person like Scotch" test bottle on any shelf. Glenfiddich 12 Year Single Malt Scotch ($69.09) is its closest rival and slightly grassier and drier; Glenfiddich Scotch Single Malt 14 Year ($79.99) adds a bourbon-cask finish that pushes it sweeter, which lands well with drinkers coming over from American whiskey.

For a step up in richness, Macallan Double Cask Scotch Single Malt 12 Year ($88.99) is the sherry-influenced Speyside style at its most recognisable — dried fruit, orange peel, baking spice — and is the bottle most often bought as a gift in this state for good reason.

Highland Park 12 Year Single Malt Scotch Whisky ($67.99) sits in between: an Orkney malt with heather-peat smoke turned down to a whisper alongside sherry-cask sweetness. It is the best single bottle for someone who is not sure yet whether they like smoke. Highland Park 15 Year Viking Heart Single Malt Scotch Whisky ($128.09) is the fuller, rounder version of the same idea.

Coastal and lightly smoky

Oban 14 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky ($84.99) is a West Highland malt with sea salt, citrus and a faint wisp of smoke — it drinks like the coastline it comes from, which makes it an easy sell in a state with 840 miles of it. Oban Little Bay Single Malt Scotch Whisky ($57.99) is the no-age-statement version at a lower price, and Talisker Single Malt 10 Yr ($89.99) takes the same maritime idea and adds genuine pepper and smoke from Skye.

Loch Lomond Scotch Single Malt 12 Year ($69.99) deserves more attention than it gets — a Highland malt distilled on unusual straight-neck stills, with a lightly oily texture and a little smoke, at a price well under the famous names.

Full Islay: the LA cocktail bar shelf

Smoke, properly. Laphroaig 10 Year Single Malt Scotch Whisky ($59.99) is the uncompromising version — medicinal, tarry, seaweed and antiseptic in the best possible way. Laphroaig Select Single Malt Whiskey ($49.99) is a softer, cheaper entry point if you want to test the waters first.

Ardbeg 10 Year Single Malt Scotch Whisky ($78.09) runs smoke alongside surprising citrus and sweetness and is the Islay most likely to convert a sceptic. Ardbeg Wee Beastie 5 Yrs Old Scotch ($59.99) is younger, sharper and built for cocktails — it holds up in a Penicillin better than bottles twice the price. Lagavulin 12 Years Aged Special Release 2023 Single Malt Scotch ($185.99) is the special-occasion Islay, bottled at cask strength with the smoke concentrated rather than softened.

Blends: the everyday and the highball

Johnnie Walker Scotch Black Label 12 Yr. 80 1L ($52.09) in the litre is the practical house bottle — twelve years old, a touch of smoke, and enough body to survive soda and ice. Johnnie Walker Scotch Red Label 80 ($24.99) is the mixing bottle proper, and Dewar Scotch White Label ($26.99) is the softest and most forgiving of the three if smoke is not wanted at all. Buchanans Deluxe 12 Yrs ($38.09) has a large and loyal California following, particularly in Los Angeles and the Inland Empire, and drinks smoother than its price suggests.

Shipping Scotch to California

A few practical notes. California is a straightforward state to ship spirits into and does not impose the direct-shipment restrictions that make ordering difficult in the control states. An adult 21+ signature is required at delivery, so send it somewhere someone will be home — a workplace address is usually the safer bet than a gated Los Angeles apartment building.

Late August through October is the best shipping window of the year here. Inland heat in the Central Valley, Palm Springs and the Inland Empire peaks in July and August and can push a package sitting in a truck well past 100°F, which is hard on cork closures even though it will not spoil the whisky. Coastal LA, the Bay Area and San Diego are temperate enough to ship into year-round.
