La Gritona Reposado Tequila

Appearance:
Very pale straw with brilliant clarity, noticeably lighter than many reposado tequilas due to its restrained barrel influence.

Nose:
Fresh and distinctly agave-forward, opening with cooked agave, green herbs, fresh vegetation, and subtle citrus. Light earthy and mineral notes develop underneath, while the oak remains deliberately subdued. Rather than the vanilla and caramel character often associated with reposado tequila, the aroma stays crisp, clean, and close to the character of a quality blanco.

Palate:
Smooth, rounded, and herbaceous with sweet cooked agave at the center. Fresh green herbs, citrus peel, gentle earthiness, and mineral notes provide complexity, followed by a soft vegetal character. Six months of aging adds texture and mellowness without masking the natural agave flavors. The profile is notably light on sweetness and avoids heavy vanilla, caramel, or pronounced oak.

Finish:
Clean, soft, and exceptionally rounded, with lingering cooked agave, fresh herbs, citrus, and subtle earthy minerality. Minimal heat makes the finish smooth and highly approachable.

Overall:
La Gritona Reposado is an unusually fresh and agave-driven expression of reposado tequila. Rather than using barrel aging to create a rich, whiskey-like profile, the six-month rest primarily softens and rounds the tequila while preserving its bright, vegetal character. It is an excellent choice for drinkers who enjoy the purity and freshness of blanco tequila but want the added texture and refinement that careful aging can provide.

Production Details:

  • Origin: Valle de Guadalupe, Jalisco, México
  • Distillery: NOM 1533
  • Master Distiller: Melly Barajas
  • Agave: Mature Blue Weber agave, typically 8–10 years old
  • Cooking: Steam-cooked in thick-walled ovens for approximately 24 hours, followed by a 24-hour rest
  • Fermentation: Naturally fermented in open stainless-steel vats, typically 8–12 days
  • Distillation: Twice distilled in stainless-steel stills with copper coils
  • Aging: 6 months in heavily reused American whiskey barrels, including barrels previously used by Jack Daniel’s and Balcones
  • Additives: Additive-free
  • Alcohol: 40% ABV / 80 Proof

The repeated use of the barrels intentionally reduces strong oak and whiskey influence, allowing the cooked agave and fresh vegetal qualities to remain the dominant characteristics of the tequila.
