Larceny Small Batch Bourbon

Larceny Small Batch is Heaven Hill's flagship wheated bourbon — Kentucky straight bourbon made with wheat replacing rye as the small grain in the mash bill. Bottled at 92 proof, no formal age statement (typically aged 6–8 years), and produced as a small-batch blend of approximately 100 barrels per batch. The name and label imagery pay tribute to John E. Fitzgerald, a turn-of-the-20th-century US Treasury agent and bourbon enthusiast who allegedly used his official keys to "borrow" samples from the best barrels at his rickhouses. Larceny inherited the Old Fitzgerald wheated-bourbon recipe at Heaven Hill, which is why bourbon writers often describe the two brands as cousins.

A classic wheated bourbon profile, slightly more robust than Maker's Mark thanks to the 2 extra proof points: vanilla, soft caramel, baking spice, light honey, a subtle nuttiness, and a moderately long finish. The mouthfeel is creamy without being heavy, and the wheated softness keeps it from getting aggressive. Drinks excellently neat, on the rocks, or in any classic stirred cocktail. A genuine value play at $40 — most wheated bourbons in this profile range start at $50+.

Both are wheated bourbons. Maker's Mark sits at 90 proof, leans soft and approachable, and is the larger-volume household name. Larceny is 92 proof, drinks slightly more assertively, and carries a touch more caramel depth. At a $3 price difference (around $40 vs. $37 for the 750ml), Larceny is the wheated-bourbon-lover's daily-pour pick over Maker's — you get a slightly more developed bottle for almost the same price. Larceny Small Batch is the everyday 92-proof bottling. Larceny Barrel Proof is the same wheated mash bill bottled at full barrel strength — typically 120–127 proof depending on the batch (Heaven Hill releases batches A, B, and C each year, numbered by quarter and proof). Same DNA, but the barrel-proof version is much more intense: bigger caramel, oilier mouthfeel, longer finish, and the ability to take a few drops of water without losing character. The Barrel Proof bottling has won "Bourbon of the Year" honors from Whisky Advocate, and at roughly $98 it's a serious step up from the $40 Small Batch.

Larceny's wheated softness plus 92 proof makes it one of the more versatile cocktail bourbons in the under-$50 tier. Particularly strong in:
