A rare high wheat whiskey by the World Whiskey Society showcases heavy rum notes, leaving little to the imagination when guessing what finishing barrel was used.
The sip starts with a nose full of dominant rum flavors that leave little to the imagination regarding what finishing barrel was used on this bourbon. Heavy syrup-soaked raises, molasses, and brown sugar dominate. Moving onto the palate, a combination of prominent rum flavors with clear wheat whiskey undertones greets you in syrup-soaked raises, fresh holiday bread, and summer fruits. It’s an exciting combination because you don’t see high wheat whiskeys usually finished in rum barrels.
Rounding out the sip is a fine finish, though it is more straightforward than the nose and palate, delivering what is necessary but nothing more. It’s short, with the flavors dropping off quickly and providing an all too abrupt end to the sip. Overall, the World Whiskey Society 6-Year Straight Bourbon Finished in Rum Cask is incredibly drinkable for the proof. If you like dishes (and wheated bourbons), you’ll be at home with this heavily influenced rum barrel-finished whiskey.
The bottle being reviewed is number 1980 of 2000, designated “Limited Edition No. 13.”
