Tres Agaves Organic Tequila Extra Añejo (750mL) is a fully certified-organic, additive-free extra añejo built for the agave drinker who wants barrel age without the triple-digit collector markup that usually comes with the category.

Process & Profile

Distilled from 100% organic Blue Weber agave grown in the Los Valles lowlands of Jalisco and produced at the brand's distillery in Amatitán — the historic birthplace of tequila — this expression is matured well past the three-year legal minimum for extra añejo, typically four years or more, in used American oak barrels sourced from Four Roses in Kentucky. The bourbon-seasoned wood is what pushes the color deep amber and layers the spirit with dessert-like sweetness. Tres Agaves traces back to Barry Augus, a former Cabo Wabo Tequila president who launched the label by hand-delivering organic agave nectar out of his minivan before a single case of tequila ever shipped; the brand later went all-organic across its range and is now overseen by master distiller Iliana Partida.

On the nose, cooked agave leads into vanilla bean, caramel, butterscotch, baking spice, and a note of dried apricot.

On the palate, it turns velvety and rounded — dark chocolate, toasted pecan, and caramelized oak, with the underlying agave keeping it from tipping into cloying.

The finish is long and warming, closing on toasted oak and gentle clove.

What sets this bottling apart within the Tres Agaves line is restraint: where the Blanco, Reposado, and Añejo show the house's clean cocktail-first agave, the Extra Añejo is the only one given years in ex-bourbon wood, and it stays additive-free — no coloring or sweetening to fake the depth the barrel earns. Priced well under the $200-plus that most extra añejos command, it leans on Jalisco farming relationships rather than marketing.

Serve neat in a Glencairn or copita to let the barrel and agave show; a squat rocks glass with a single large cube works for slow sipping after a meal.
