Tomintoul Cigar Malt Oloroso Sherry Cask Whisky (750mL) is a Speyside single malt built backwards from a specific occasion: it was assembled to hold its own against a lit cigar, which means more sherry weight and more sweet oak than the distillery's standard bottlings carry. The natural buyer is the after-dinner sipper who wants a dram with enough body to survive smoke.

Process & Profile

Tomintoul sits near the village of Tomintoul on the Glenlivet estate, the highest village in the Scottish Highlands, and has been distilling since 1964. The house nickname is "The Gentle Dram," a reputation shaped by master distiller Robert Fleming, a fourth-generation Speyside distiller who has run the site for more than three decades. Cigar Malt is where that gentleness gets deliberately overruled: full Oloroso sherry cask maturation, bottled at 43% ABV (86 proof) in a 750mL bottle with a presentation tube.

On the nose, dried figs and raisin lead, backed by dark chocolate, cinnamon bark, walnut, and a thin thread of woodsmoke.

On the palate, it turns to sticky toffee, orange peel, clove, roasted hazelnut, and a dry sherried oak that arrives late.

The finish is long and drying, with dark fruit and oak tannin holding on well past the swallow — the trait the cigar pairing is engineered around.

Most of Tomintoul's core range is bourbon-cask-driven and light on its feet; the Cigar Malt is the outlier, an Oloroso-forward expression made for a use case rather than a house style. It also arrives in a gift tube as standard, which is unusual at this price point in the Speyside category.

Serve neat in a Glencairn, or with a few drops of water to lift the spice. Dark chocolate or a slice of fruitcake is a better companion than anything savory.
