Learn MoreTomintoul Caribbean Rum Whisky (750mL) is a Speyside single malt matured in American oak and then finished in Caribbean rum barrels, which pushes the distillery's naturally soft profile toward tropical fruit and molasses. It is an easy entry point for someone moving from rum or bourbon into single malt Scotch.
Process & Profile
Tomintoul has been distilling since 1964 on the Glenlivet estate near the highest village in the Scottish Highlands, and trades on the nickname "The Gentle Dram" — a light, unpeated house character shaped by master distiller Robert Fleming, a fourth-generation Speyside distiller. This bottling belongs to the distillery's Small Batch Cask Finish collection, a no-age-statement range bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof) and priced to be opened rather than shelved. Base maturation is ex-bourbon American oak; the rum barrels do the finishing work.
On the nose, banana and grilled pineapple lead, with vanilla pod, light brown sugar, and a touch of coconut behind them.
On the palate, demerara sweetness and creamy malt come first, followed by baked apple, a soft nutmeg spice, and a molasses note the rum casks leave behind.
The finish is short to medium and sweet, closing on vanilla and toasted oak without any dryness.
Rum-cask Scotch usually means a fleeting finish tacked onto a heavier malt; here it is applied to a base that was already light and honeyed, so the tropical character reads as part of the whisky rather than a coat of paint. It arrives with a matching gift tube, which is uncommon in this price bracket.
Serve neat or with a splash of water. Grilled pineapple or a crème brûlée matches the sweetness better than a savory pairing would.
