Process & Profile

Distilled in 1984 and matured for 37 years, this release forms part of the third Prima & Ultima chapter, drawn from the last surviving 1984 Talisker stock — a small parcel of three refill bourbon hogsheads and a single ex-sherry butt — and bottled in December 2021 at a natural cask strength of 51.9% (103.8 proof). Talisker has stood on the shores of Loch Harport since Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill built it in 1830, and for much of its history it was the only distillery on Skye; the maritime setting is what gives the whisky its trademark sea-spray and pepper. Prima & Ultima exists to capture exactly this kind of liquid: the “first and last” casks a master blender sets aside as irreplaceable.

On the nose, waves of mango and tropical fruit, heather honey, brine, and a curl of gentle peat smoke.

On the palate, decades in oak show as candied orange, dark honey, cracked white pepper, and softened maritime smoke.

The finish is remarkably long, drying slowly through sea salt, oak spice, and a lingering coastal smokiness.

After nearly four decades the peat has receded into the background, leaving a poised, fruit-forward Talisker that bears little resemblance to the punchy 10-year most drinkers know — the whole point of a 37-year single-cask bottling.
