The 2016 Rosso Piceno Roggio del Filare shows masses of black raspberry, plus notes of tobacco, dried roses, savory brown spices and a hint of menthol. Silky textures coat the senses in concentrated blue and black fruits, yet brisk acids maintain balance, and peppery inner florals develop toward the finale. The finish is long and structured, with grippy tannins, as a mix of dried berries and inner rose notes fade. This blend of 70% Montepulciano and 30% Sangiovese spends 18 months in French oak, and you can tell; yet I must admit that it also finds balance and maintains a very fresh fruit persona.
