Perfect for refined pairings or standalone enjoyment, this Chardonnay reflects the mastery of Roco Winery's celebrated craftsmanship.

Process & Profile

The Roco Gravel Road Chardonnay is a testament to expert craftsmanship and Oregon's exceptional terroir. This Willamette Valley wine blends fruit from three outstanding vineyards—Knudsen, Marsh Estate, and Gran Moraine—all benefiting from sedimentary and basalt-rich soils. The meticulous winemaking process involves handpicking the grapes, chilling them overnight, and employing French oak fermentation. Malolactic fermentation further enhances the wine's complexity, lending it a creamy texture and balanced acidity. Aged on its lees for added depth, this Chardonnay is the epitome of elegance and refinement.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the origin of Roco Gravel Road Chardonnay?

The Roco Gravel Road Chardonnay is crafted from grapes sourced from three distinguished vineyards in the Willamette Valley: Gran Moraine, Marsh Estate, and Knudsen Vineyards. These vineyards contribute distinct characteristics due to their varying elevations and soil types, including sandstone-shale and volcanic soils.

What makes the winemaking process unique for this Chardonnay?

The handpicked grapes are chilled to 38°F overnight before being pressed to extract the juice. The juice undergoes primary fermentation in neutral oak barrels and completes malolactic fermentation, which softens acidity and adds complexity. The wine is aged for at least five months in a mix of new and neutral French oak to enhance texture and flavor.

What flavor profile can I expect from Gravel Road Chardonnay?

This Chardonnay offers a creamy texture balanced by a distinct minerality. Expect flavors of ripe stone fruits, subtle citrus notes, and a hint of oak, delivering a well-rounded and elegant tasting experience.

How should I serve Gravel Road Chardonnay?

Serve this wine chilled, ideally at a temperature of 48–55°F, to enjoy its delicate flavors and aromas. It pairs beautifully with seafood, creamy pasta dishes, and soft cheeses.

What makes the 2023 vintage special?

The 2023 vintage embodies the exceptional terroir of the Willamette Valley. The diverse vineyard elevations and soil types contribute to a balanced wine with both creamy texture and vibrant minerality.

Is Roco Gravel Road Chardonnay sustainably produced?

Yes, ROCO Winery is committed to sustainable and environmentally friendly practices in both vineyard management and winemaking, reflecting respect for the land and long-term quality.

Can I visit Roco Winery to taste Gravel Road Chardonnay?

Yes, the winery's tasting room is open daily from 10 AM to 5 PM in Oregon's picturesque Dundee Hills. Walk-ins are welcome, and visitors can enjoy flights of ROCO's premium wines, including Chardonnay.

Roco gravel road chardonnay — Frequently Asked Questions

What does ROCO Gravel Road Chardonnay actually taste like?
Citrus and orchard fruit — lemon, green apple, a little white peach — with oak used as seasoning rather than as a flavour of its own. The defining feature is acidity: Oregon's cool nights preserve it, so the wine finishes clean and bright instead of thick. If you have written off American Chardonnay because of the heavily buttered, oaky style, this is the corrective bottle. Rollin Soles founded ROCO after two decades as winemaker at Argyle, and the Gravel Road tier is his entry-level bottling.
Is it oaked or unoaked?
Lightly and judiciously oaked. It is not a stainless-steel, Chablis-style wine, but nor is it the buttery, malolactic-forward style that gave California Chardonnay its reputation. The oak adds a faint toast and a rounder texture on the mid-palate while leaving the fruit and acid in charge. It sits closer to white Burgundy than to a big Napa Chardonnay. Compare it against the rest of the shelf in our Chardonnay collection.
What should I serve it with?
Roast chicken, salmon, crab and Dungeness, anything in a cream or butter sauce, and mild soft cheeses. It also handles the awkward middle of a holiday table well — the dishes that are too rich for a Sauvignon Blanc and too delicate for a red. Serve it at about 50–55°F: straight from a cold fridge is too cold and mutes the aromatics, so give it ten to fifteen minutes on the counter first.
Why is Oregon Chardonnay cheaper than Oregon Pinot Noir?
Attention, not quality. Oregon built its reputation on Pinot Noir, so Pinot commands the price and the press while Chardonnay from the same estates and often the same vineyards is priced as a secondary line. That gap is the single best value in the state's wine right now. We made the fuller argument in our guide to the 2026 harvest and Willamette Valley wine.
How long will it keep, and how long once opened?
Unopened and stored on its side somewhere dark with a stable temperature, this drinks best within about three to four years of release — Oregon Chardonnay at this tier is made to drink, not to cellar for a decade. Once opened, re-cork it and get it back in the fridge; it will hold up for three to four days, and the acidity means it fades more slowly than a richer, lower-acid white.
What else should I look at from the same producer or region?
ROCO makes ROCO Gravel Road Pinot Noir ($23.99) at the same tier, which is the value benchmark of our Oregon Pinot shelf and the natural companion bottle. For a richer, more textural Oregon Chardonnay, Resonance Chardonnay ($44.99).
