Learn MoreQuinta da Pacheca Reserva Red Douro D.O.C. is a structured and elegant Portuguese red that showcases the depth and character of the Douro Valley. The current 2024 vintage is crafted from 50% Touriga Francesa, 20% Tinta Roriz, 20% Touriga Nacional, and 10% Tinto Cão, then matured for one year in used 300-liter French oak barrels. Bottled at 13.5% ABV, it combines ripe red fruit, gentle spice, integrated oak, and chocolate with a full, persistent finish.
Produced by historic Quinta da Pacheca in Portugal’s Douro DOC, this Reserva brings together four indigenous varieties that express the region’s distinctive balance of ripe fruit, freshness, tannin, and aromatic complexity. Touriga Francesa forms the core of the blend, complemented by Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional, and Tinto Cão.
Vinification is carried out through traditional fermentation with selected yeasts in temperature-controlled tanks at approximately 24°C / 75°F. Periodic pump-overs and délestage are used to encourage controlled oxygenation and polyphenol extraction, while malolactic fermentation takes place alongside alcoholic fermentation.
Following fermentation, the wine spends one year in used 300-liter French oak barrels. The use of seasoned rather than entirely new oak allows the wine to gain additional texture, spice, and complexity while keeping the Douro fruit at the center of the profile.
In the glass, the wine displays a deep ruby-red color. The nose opens with red-fruit preserves and ripe berries, followed by subtle spice and well-integrated oak. The aromas are rich but polished, reflecting the Reserva’s balance between concentrated fruit and barrel maturation.
On the palate, ripe fruit leads into a full, structured texture with layers of dark chocolate, spice, and oak. The wine has enough body and tannic presence to stand alongside rich foods while maintaining freshness and balance through the mid-palate.
The finish is long and persistent, leaving lingering ripe fruit, chocolate, gentle spice, and subtle wood notes. Its combination of structure and polish gives it immediate drinking appeal while also making it well suited to short- to medium-term cellaring.
What makes Quinta da Pacheca Reserva Red Douro D.O.C. particularly compelling is its combination of traditional Douro grape varieties, controlled vinification, one year of French-oak maturation, and a concentrated yet refined Reserva style. Winemaking for the current release is overseen by Maria de Serpa Pimentel and João Silva e Sousa.
Serve at approximately 16–18°C / 60–64°F. Quinta da Pacheca recommends it with red meats, grilled and roasted dishes, stews, roasted octopus, baked cod, and firm sheep’s- or goat’s-milk cheeses.
