Quinta da Pacheca 10 Years Old Tawny Port is an elegant aged Port that beautifully expresses the complexity created by extended oxidative maturation in traditional oak casks. Produced at historic Quinta da Pacheca in Portugal’s Douro Valley, it is blended from several certified traditional red grape varieties and aged for many years in old 550-liter casks. Bottled at 19.5% ABV, it offers a sophisticated combination of dried nuts, caramel, chocolate, subtle menthol, and mature oxidative richness, balanced by refreshing acidity and a long, polished finish.

Process & Profile

Quinta da Pacheca’s 10 Year Tawny is produced from a blend of several certified traditional red grape varieties from Portugal’s Douro region. Rather than representing a single vintage, the wine combines different lots of Port selected and blended to achieve the complexity, maturity, and house character associated with a 10 Years Old Tawny designation.

After vinification and fortification, the component wines spend many years slowly maturing in the cool cellars of Quinta da Pacheca in old 550-liter wooden casks. This prolonged contact with oxygen gradually transforms the wine from youthful ruby tones toward its characteristic amber-tawny color, while developing the nutty, caramelized, and oxidative aromas that define aged Tawny Port.

Traditional production involves grapes being carefully sorted before gentle crushing and transfer to traditional stone lagares, where foot treading may be used. Fermentation is then stopped through the addition of grape spirit, preserving natural sweetness while increasing alcoholic strength and creating the foundation for extended maturation.

In the glass, Quinta da Pacheca 10 Year Tawny displays an attractive amber-tawny hue developed through years of oxidative aging. The nose is fresh and elegant, revealing dried nuts, subtle menthol, caramel, chocolate, and fine mature wood, with additional nuances developing as the wine opens.

The palate is full-bodied yet remarkably fresh, combining caramelized sweetness and dried-fruit richness with enough acidity to maintain balance. Layers of walnut and other dried nuts, buttery caramel, chocolate, mature oak, and gently oxidized fruit create a smooth, complex texture without becoming excessively heavy.

The finish is long and persistent, carrying lingering notes of nuts, caramel, chocolate, dried fruit, and seasoned wood. Its combination of mature sweetness and lively acidity gives the wine an elegant, composed character that works equally well as an aperitif or after-dinner pour.

What makes Quinta da Pacheca 10 Years Old Tawny Port especially compelling is its combination of traditional Douro grape varieties, prolonged aging in seasoned 550-liter casks, oxidative complexity, and careful blending under winemaker Maria de Serpa Pimentel. The wine has also received 92 points from James Suckling, reinforcing its position as an accomplished expression of aged Tawny Port.

Serve it slightly chilled. Quinta da Pacheca recommends it as an aperitif or at the end of a meal with cheese, dark-chocolate desserts, or red fruits. The estate recommends a serving temperature of approximately 16–18°C / 60–64°F.
