Massican Sauvignon Blanc is a bright, mineral-driven California white that reflects winemaker Dan Petroski’s Mediterranean-inspired approach to Sauvignon Blanc. The current 2025 vintage is made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc sourced across Napa, Sonoma, Clarksburg, and Lodi, creating a wine with vibrant citrus, green apple, tropical fruit, fresh herbs, and chalky minerality. Bottled at 12.5% ABV, it is completely dry, energetic, and refreshing, with the high acidity and savory freshness that have made Massican Sauvignon Blanc one of the winery’s signature releases.

Process & Profile

Massican was founded with a singular focus on producing Mediterranean-inspired white wines in California. Sauvignon Blanc has played an important role in the winery’s history and has become one of its most recognized wines, including a decade-long run by the glass at The French Laundry.

The 2025 Sauvignon Blanc comes from several distinct California growing regions, with approximately 28% Napa Valley, 34% Sonoma, 33% Clarksburg, and 5% Lodi fruit. Vineyard sources include sites in Calistoga, Carneros, Yountville, Russian River Valley, Clarksburg, and Lodi, allowing Massican to combine warm-climate fruit expression with cooler-site freshness and acidity.

The wine is fermented and aged entirely in stainless steel, with approximately 44% in stainless-steel barrels and the remainder in stainless-steel tanks. This approach avoids oak flavor and preserves Sauvignon Blanc’s natural citrus, herbal, floral, and mineral character. The finished wine contains approximately 0.1 g/L residual sugar, making it essentially bone dry.

On the nose, the 2025 opens with lemon verbena, green apple, citrus blossom, and freshly cut grass. Its aromatics are crisp and expressive, combining ripe fruit with the herbal freshness and savory character associated with Sauvignon Blanc.

The palate is light-bodied and energetic, delivering pineapple, grapefruit, kiwi, lime zest, and green apple, supported by pronounced acidity and a distinctive chalky mineral character. The combination of citrus and tropical fruit gives the wine immediate appeal, while its acidity keeps everything focused and refreshing.

The finish is dry, long, and mouthwatering, with lingering grapefruit, lime zest, minerals, fresh herbs, and subtle saline character. Massican reports a pH of 3.2 and total acidity of 7.4 g/L, reinforcing the crisp, vibrant structure that defines the wine.

What makes Massican Sauvignon Blanc especially compelling is its combination of multi-region California sourcing, zero-oak freshness, virtually no residual sugar, restrained alcohol, and Mediterranean-inspired styling. The 2025 vintage has also received 93 points from James Suckling, who highlighted its aromatic intensity, citrus-driven profile, tangy acidity, and mineral finish.

Serve it well chilled as an aperitif or alongside oysters, shellfish, grilled fish, goat cheese, fresh salads, ceviche, or Mediterranean-inspired dishes. Massican specifically recommends Sauvignon Blanc with goat cheese and Condiglione, an Italian-style Niçoise salad.
