Glenglassaugh Sandend Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a coastal Highland malt matured in a three-way marriage of bourbon, sherry, and manzanilla casks, built to show tropical fruit and sea spray rather than the sherry-bomb heft of many of its peers. A standout for the drinker chasing brightness and salinity in a Highland pour.

Process & Profile

Bottled at 50.5% ABV (101 proof) and unpeated, the release carries the name of Sandend Bay, the crescent beach overlooked by the distillery where Master Blender Rachel Barrie learned to surf as a child. Glenglassaugh was founded in 1875, sat silent for more than two decades, and was revived in 2008 before Brown-Forman took ownership in 2017 and placed Barrie — with over 30 years in Scotch — at the blending helm. The distillery's seaside warehouses lend the spirit a coastal salinity you rarely find inland.

On the nose, mango, pineapple, and ripe peach lift over vanilla, honey, and a saline sea breeze.

On the palate, tropical fruit carries into orange citrus, toffee, gentle oak spice, and a savory mineral edge.

The finish is medium-long, warming, and faintly salted, with sweet fruit lingering against dry oak.

What sets it apart within the range is recognition: Whisky Advocate named Sandend its Whisky of the Year 2023 in a near-unanimous vote — a striking result for a no-age-statement, entry-tier bottling, and a signal of how deftly the manzanilla-cask component threads coastal freshness through the sweetness.

Serve neat in a Glencairn, then add a few drops of water to open the tropical layers; it pairs naturally with fresh seafood or roast chicken.
