Gentiane des Pères Chartreux Liqueur Apéritif is the one Chartreuse that names its secret: where the famous green and yellow liqueurs guard a 130-botanical recipe, this bottling puts a single ingredient front and center — Alpine gentian root. At a gentle 22.7% ABV, it's the natural pour for anyone who reaches for Suze or a bitter aperitivo but wants monastic pedigree behind the glass.

Process & Profile

The liqueur is made by the Carthusian monks at the Grande Chartreuse near Voiron, the same order that has distilled herbal spirits since their green elixir recipe surfaced in 1605. Gentian revealed itself as the star here only in 1998, making this the most transparent creation in the house — a rare admission from a producer whose flagship formula is known to just a handful of monks. Bottled at 22.7% ABV (45.4 proof), it leans low in strength but dense in botanical weight, built around bitter gentian rounded with a lift of sweet citrus.

On the nose, fresh-dug gentian root, candied orange peel, cut grass, chamomile, and a faint thread of vanilla.

On the palate, earthy gentian bitterness leads, softened by sweet orange, grassy green herbs, dried hay, and a touch of honeyed root.

The finish is medium and cleanly bitter, drying toward citrus pith and lingering herbal spice rather than sugar.

What sets it apart within the Chartreuse line is exactly that candor: the green and yellow expressions are riddles you sip, while this one is a study of a single root the monks were willing to name. It reads less like a digestif and more like a French answer to the great gentian aperitifs, with the monastery's fingerprint on the balance.

Serve well chilled at roughly 12–14°C in a small tumbler over one large cube, or lengthen it with tonic and an orange twist. It sits comfortably alongside a plate of charcuterie before a meal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is this whisky?
It isn't a whisky — it's a French gentian-root apéritif liqueur made by the Carthusian monks of the Grande Chartreuse.

What are the specs?
22.7% ABV (45.4 proof), 700mL, produced in France; a low-strength herbal apéritif.

What does it taste like?
Earthy gentian bitterness lifted by sweet orange and grassy herbs, finishing dry on citrus pith and herbal spice.

How should you enjoy it?
Chilled to 12–14°C over a large cube, or topped with tonic and an orange twist as an aperitif.

Why is this release notable?
