Fonseca Vintage Port is one of the benchmark expressions of classic Douro Vintage Port, renowned for its opulent fruit, concentration, perfume, and exceptional ability to age for decades. The newly declared 2024 vintage is sourced from Fonseca’s historic estate vineyards—Quinta do Cruzeiro, Quinta de Santo António, and Quinta do Panascal—and produced using traditional granite lagares and foot treading. Bottled at approximately 20% ABV, the 2024 delivers concentrated black cherry, cassis, blackcurrant, violet, crushed mint, wild herbs, and mineral notes framed by fine, powerful tannins and vibrant acidity.

Process & Profile

Fonseca has been regarded among the leading Vintage Port houses since the 19th century, with a house style defined by lush fruit, richness, aromatic intensity, and impressive longevity. Classic Fonseca Vintage Port is only declared when the harvest produces wines considered capable of exceptional long-term development in bottle.

The 2024 Classic Vintage comes from Fonseca’s three principal estates. Quinta do Cruzeiro in the Pinhão Valley contributes concentrated black fruit and firm tannic grip; Quinta do Panascal in the Távora Valley brings voluptuous fruit and velvety texture; and Quinta de Santo António contributes aromatic complexity, freshness, and acidity.

Traditional Douro grape varieties contribute to the blend, including Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Francesa, and Tinta Cão, together with traditional mixed vineyard plantings. The 2024 harvest showed particularly strong quality in Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz, while Touriga Francesa and Tinta Cão benefited from additional time on the vine.

Production remains deeply traditional. The 2024 wines were fermented in granite lagares with foot treading, with co-fermentation of traditional varieties helping build complexity, color, structure, and aromatic depth. Unlike wood-aged Port, Vintage Port spends relatively little time in cask before bottling and develops its greatest complexity through decades of bottle maturation.

In the glass, the 2024 shows a deep, rich purple color with a fine violet rim. The bouquet is exceptionally pure and concentrated, led by black cherry, cassis, and blackcurrant, followed by delicate violet perfume, crushed mint, hints of tropical fruit, and an attractive mineral quality.

The palate is rich, luscious, and powerful, with concentrated woodland berries supported by taut yet polished tannins. Layers of dark fruit develop alongside wild herbs, exotic wood nuances, mint, and mineral character, while lively acidity gives the wine remarkable freshness and definition despite its concentration.

The finish is long, bright, and persistent, carrying black fruit, mint, herbs, floral notes, and fine mineral tension. The combination of concentrated fruit, structured tannin, and high natural acidity gives the 2024 the architecture required for very long bottle aging. Fonseca notes that its classic Vintage Ports can evolve for many decades and, in exceptional cases, for over a century.

What makes Fonseca Vintage Port 2024 particularly significant is that it marks the house’s first Classic Vintage declaration in seven years, following the 2017 vintage. Fonseca described 2024 as its smallest and rarest Classic Vintage declaration to date, highlighting both the selectivity of the release and the exceptional quality of the harvest.

Serve slightly chilled at approximately 12–16°C / 54–61°F. Young bottles should be decanted before serving to separate natural sediment and give the wine time to open. Classic accompaniments include Stilton and other blue cheeses, walnuts, dried figs or apricots, and dark chocolate, though a mature bottle can be enjoyed entirely on its own.
