Domaine Pascal Balland Sancerre is a refined, mineral-driven Sauvignon Blanc from the historic wine village of Bué in France’s Loire Valley. The 2024 vintage is made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc grown on the estate’s classic caillottes and terres blanches—stony limestone and clay-limestone soils. Bottled at approximately 12.5% ABV, it combines ripe pear, plum, mandarin, fresh lemon, subtle smoky notes, and pronounced minerality with balanced acidity and a long, elegant finish.

Process & Profile

Domaine Pascal Balland is rooted in Bué, one of the historic villages of the Sancerre appellation. The Balland family’s winegrowing history in the village stretches back to approximately 1650, with Pascal Balland managing the estate since 1984. Today the domaine covers roughly 9 to 9.5 hectares and specializes in Sancerre.

The vineyards are planted primarily on two of Sancerre’s defining soil types: caillottes, the region’s highly stony limestone soils, and terres blanches, clay-limestone soils. This combination contributes both aromatic precision and the chalky mineral structure that gives the domaine’s Sauvignon Blanc its distinctly Sancerre character. The vineyards are managed using sustainable viticultural practices.

The 2024 Sancerre Blanc is produced entirely from Sauvignon Blanc and matured in tank, allowing the freshness, fruit, acidity, and mineral qualities of the vineyard to remain at the center of the wine rather than being shaped by oak. Production for the vintage was approximately 50,000 bottles.

In the glass, the wine offers a delicate yet expressive bouquet of ripe pear and plum, followed by fresh mandarin and lemon. Gentle smoky nuances add complexity and give the otherwise fruit-driven aromatics a distinctive mineral edge.

The palate is rounded, generous, and beautifully balanced, with ripe orchard fruit and citrus supported by finely integrated acidity. Its texture has surprising breadth for Sauvignon Blanc, yet a pronounced mineral backbone keeps the wine energetic and precise.

The finish is long, clean, and mineral-driven, leaving lingering citrus, ripe fruit, subtle smoke, and chalky freshness. The balance between volume and acidity gives the wine both immediate appeal and the structure for several years of bottle development.

What makes Domaine Pascal Balland Sancerre particularly compelling is its combination of centuries of family winegrowing heritage, Bué terroir, limestone-rich soils, sustainable farming, and restrained tank maturation. Rather than relying on oak or elaborate cellar techniques, the wine focuses on the purity of Sauvignon Blanc and the character of its Sancerre origins.

The 2024 vintage earned 2 stars and a Coup de Cœur from the Guide Hachette des Vins 2026, which places it among the guide’s standout wines and specifically praised its ripe fruit, citrus, smoky nuance, breadth, acidity, and minerality. The guide suggests a drinking window of approximately 2025–2030.

Serve at approximately 12°C / 54°F. Its fresh acidity and mineral character make it an excellent partner for oysters, shellfish, grilled fish, goat cheese, salads, seafood dishes, and light appetizers. Guide Hachette specifically recommends it with fish, cheese, or as an aperitif.
