Giacomo Fenocchio Barolo Bussia is a traditionally crafted, single-vineyard Barolo from the renowned Bussia cru in Monforte d’Alba, Piedmont. The current 2021 vintage is produced from 100% Nebbiolo grown at approximately 300 meters above sea level on iron-rich clay and limestone soils. Fermented naturally with a long 40-day maceration and matured for 30 months in large Slavonian oak casks, it delivers wild cherry, blackberry, rose, licorice, mint, tobacco, spice, earth, and iron-like minerality with firm, finely textured tannins and exceptional aging potential.

Process & Profile

Giacomo Fenocchio produces its Bussia Barolo from approximately five hectares of vineyards in the Bussia zone of Monforte d’Alba, one of the historic and highly regarded growing areas within the Barolo DOCG. The vines occupy south to southwest-facing slopes at roughly 300 meters elevation, providing excellent exposure for the late-ripening Nebbiolo grape.

The vineyard soils are composed primarily of clay and calcareous sediments rich in iron. This combination contributes both structure and a distinctive mineral quality to the wine, while the hillside exposure allows Nebbiolo to develop slowly and retain the acidity necessary for long-term aging. The vines used for Bussia are approximately 30–35 years old.

Fenocchio follows a notably traditional approach in the cellar. The grapes undergo an extended 40-day maceration and spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel without added commercial yeasts, allowing the native character of the fruit and vineyard to remain at the center of the wine.

Following fermentation, the wine spends approximately six months in stainless steel, then matures for 30 months in large 35–50 hectoliter Slavonian oak casks before further bottle aging. The use of large-format oak rather than small new barrels minimizes overt wood influence and allows the floral, fruit, tannin, and mineral character of Nebbiolo to remain clearly defined.

The 2021 vintage is 100% Nebbiolo and bottled at approximately 14.5% ABV. In the glass, it shows the classic garnet color associated with mature Nebbiolo, while the aromatic profile immediately reveals the combination of fruit, florals, herbs, and savory complexity that defines traditional Barolo.

The nose opens with wild cherry, dark cherry, blackberry, plum, and strawberry, followed by layers of rose, licorice, mint, sage, cloves, tobacco, dried herbs, leather, and earthy mineral notes. As the wine develops in the glass, additional balsamic and iron-like characteristics emerge, reflecting the mineral-rich soils of Bussia.

The palate is medium-to-full-bodied, structured, and precise, with juicy cherry and plum fruit framed by polished yet persistent Nebbiolo tannins. Fresh acidity gives the wine energy, while licorice, herbs, spice, tobacco, cedar, and savory mineral notes provide additional depth.

The finish is long and mouthwatering, carrying red cherry, orange peel, herbs, iron, tar, licorice, and fine-grained tannins. Although already aromatic and expressive, the 2021 retains the structure and acidity necessary for significant bottle development.

What makes Giacomo Fenocchio Barolo Bussia particularly compelling is the combination of a historic Bussia vineyard site, 100% Nebbiolo, iron-rich limestone and clay soils, long native-yeast fermentation, extended skin contact, and traditional maturation in large Slavonian oak. Rather than relying on new oak or modern extraction, Fenocchio allows the vineyard and Nebbiolo grape to define the wine, producing a Barolo of perfume, structure, freshness, and longevity.

The 2021 vintage received 98 points from Wine Enthusiast, which highlighted its fresh rose, dark cherry, wild strawberry, tobacco, mountain-herb character, and firm yet graceful structure. It also received 94-point reviews from Vinous, Wine Spectator, James Suckling, and Jeb Dunnuck, making the vintage particularly well recognized by major critics.

Serve at approximately 60–65°F / 16–18°C. Young bottles will benefit from approximately one hour of decanting, while more mature bottles should be handled carefully to separate any natural sediment. Pair with braised beef, osso buco, roasted lamb, game, truffle risotto, mushroom dishes, aged Parmigiano-Reggiano, Pecorino, or other mature cheeses.
