Biondi Santi Brunello di Montalcino DOCG comes from the estate credited with inventing Brunello itself — a benchmark bottling for the collector who cares where a wine's story begins, not just how it tastes tonight.

Process & Profile

Made from 100% Sangiovese Grosso at Tenuta Il Greppo in Montalcino, this is Brunello from its birthplace: the Biondi-Santi family produced the first bottling in the late 19th century and effectively defined the appellation. The estate works its own proprietary BBS11 clone of Sangiovese, grown in the clay-limestone soils around Il Greppo, and ages the wine slowly in large Slavonian oak botti rather than small barriques — a traditional approach that preserves fruit purity and underpins Biondi-Santi's legendary capacity to age for decades. Alcohol typically sits around 13.5-14%.

On the nose, violet, dog rose, wild berry, dried cherry and a lift of dark culinary spice.

On the palate it is structured and vibrant: red cherry, pomegranate, licorice, black tea and a fine, savory tannin.

The finish is long and mineral, closing on forest floor, balsamic and a slow floral echo.

What sets Il Greppo apart from the flood of modern Montalcino is restraint — no new-oak gloss, no early drinkability chased at the expense of longevity. This is a wine built to be cellared, and one that rewards patience more than most Brunello on the shelf.

Decant an hour ahead and serve at cellar temperature in large Burgundy-style stems; a natural match for bistecca alla Fiorentina, wild game or aged pecorino.
