What does 'DoubleWood' mean on the Balvenie 12 Year label?
It refers to the two casks the whisky matures in sequentially: traditional oak that previously held bourbon for most of its 12 years, then a finishing period in first-fill Spanish oak sherry casks. The bourbon cask softens the spirit and builds character; the sherry cask adds depth, dried fruit and fullness of flavor.
Is Balvenie 12 Year DoubleWood peated?
No — Balvenie is a Speyside distillery, and its house style runs unpeated, fruity and honeyed rather than smoky. If you want Speyside's other signature sherry-forward style at a similar age, Aberlour 12 Year is a close comparison.
How is DoubleWood different from a standard sherry-cask scotch?
A whisky matured entirely in sherry casks spends its whole life in that wood. DoubleWood instead spends most of its 12 years in ex-bourbon oak and only finishes in sherry casks, which produces a lighter sherry influence layered over a base built by the bourbon wood, rather than a full sherry-bomb profile.
What does 'first-fill' sherry cask mean?
First-fill means the cask had only previously held sherry, not whisky — so it still carries a strong, relatively undiluted sherry character to pass on. A refill cask, having already flavored one batch of whisky, gives up less flavor the second time around.
What's a good way to drink Balvenie 12 Year DoubleWood?
Neat, in a tulip-shaped glass, is the standard way to take in the dried-fruit and honey character from the sherry finish. It also holds up fine with a single ice cube or a few drops of water if you prefer a softer pour.
