Ballentine Estate Merlot is a rich, polished Napa Valley red from the historic, family-owned Ballentine Vineyards. The current 2022 Estate Merlot is sourced from the Calistoga appellation of Napa Valley and blends 90% Merlot, 5.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2.5% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. Bottled at 15.4% ABV, it delivers plush blackberry, red plum, dark cherry, blackcurrant, chocolate, roasted coffee, vanilla, and clove in a concentrated yet elegant style.

Process & Profile

Ballentine Vineyards is a multigenerational, family-owned Napa Valley estate whose farming history dates to 1905. Today, the family farms approximately 75 acres across three estate vineyards in St. Helena and Calistoga, continuing more than a century of Napa Valley grape growing and winemaking.

The 2022 Estate Merlot is composed of 90% Merlot, complemented by 5.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2.5% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. Merlot supplies the plush fruit and supple texture, Cabernet Sauvignon adds structure, Cabernet Franc contributes aromatic complexity, and Petit Verdot brings additional color and depth.

The fruit was harvested beginning August 25, 2022. The vintage was marked by an intense early-September heatwave, prompting Ballentine to pick selectively ahead of the hottest conditions. According to the winery, the resulting 2022 reds developed impressive concentration, expression, depth, and elegance. The Estate Merlot was bottled on April 10, 2024, with only 428 cases produced.

In the glass, the wine opens with expressive aromas of ripe blackberry, red plum, and dark cherry, framed by vanilla bean, cocoa powder, and clove. The bouquet is generous and layered, combining ripe Napa fruit with darker chocolate and spice nuances.

The palate is full-bodied, plush, and fine-grained, revealing blackberry, juicy blackcurrant, and ripe raspberry. As the wine develops, layers of dark chocolate, roasted coffee bean, vanilla, and clove add depth and sophistication while fresh acidity keeps the concentrated fruit lively.

The finish is long and persistent, balancing powerful dark fruit with chocolate, coffee, subtle spice, and savory undertones. Despite its richness and 15.4% ABV, the wine maintains freshness and a polished texture through the finish.

What makes Ballentine Estate Merlot particularly compelling is its combination of estate-grown Napa Valley fruit, limited production, a Merlot-dominant Bordeaux-style blend, and more than a century of family farming heritage. Ballentine remains independently family owned and continues to farm its Napa Valley estate vineyards with a focus on sustainably grown, limited-production wines.

Serve at approximately 60–65°F / 16–18°C. Ballentine specifically recommends the 2022 Estate Merlot with roasted duck, mushroom risotto, grilled lamb chops, and flourless chocolate cake.
