Learn MoreDomaine Rolet Arbois Rouge “Tradition” is a classic Jura red from the historic Arbois appellation, blending the region’s indigenous Poulsard and Trousseau with Pinot Noir. The current 2024 vintage combines 40% Poulsard, 30% Trousseau, and 30% Pinot Noir and is bottled at 12.5% ABV. Grown on red marl and gravel soils around Arbois and Montigny, it delivers cherry, raspberry, dried herbs, pink pepper, subtle almond, and earthy spice with bright acidity, supple tannins, and the naturally light, savory character that distinguishes traditional Jura reds.
Domaine Rolet was founded in 1942 by Désiré Rolet and developed over two generations into one of the established estates of the Jura. The family built its reputation around the region’s traditional grapes and appellations, producing wines from Arbois, Côtes du Jura, L’Étoile, and Château-Chalon. In 2018, ownership passed to the Flambert and Dupuis families, who have continued the domaine’s emphasis on expressing classic Jura varieties and terroirs.
Arbois Rouge “Tradition” comes from vineyards located in Arbois and Montigny, where the soils consist primarily of red marl and gravel. These relatively cool Jura sites help preserve freshness and acidity while allowing the three red varieties to develop their individual aromatic and structural personalities.
The blend is composed of 40% Poulsard, 30% Trousseau, and 30% Pinot Noir. Poulsard contributes delicate red fruit, freshness, and the wine’s naturally light color; Trousseau brings additional spice, depth, and structure; and Pinot Noir adds supple fruit and texture. Together, the three varieties create a balanced expression that favors elegance and aromatic complexity over weight or extraction.
Harvesting and sorting are performed by hand. Each grape variety is then matured separately for approximately 12 months in large oak foudres, allowing Poulsard, Trousseau, and Pinot Noir to retain their individual character. The wines are blended approximately three months before bottling, giving the finished cuvée time to integrate before release.
In the glass, Arbois Rouge “Tradition” shows the naturally light ruby color associated with traditional Jura reds. The aromatic profile centers on cherry and raspberry, joined by dried herbs, pink pepper, subtle almond, and gently earthy notes. Recent tasting information also highlights the wine’s freshness and lifted red-fruit character.
The palate is dry, fresh, and supple, with juicy red berries carried by lively acidity and fine tannins. Poulsard keeps the wine delicate and aromatic, while Trousseau contributes peppery spice and a slightly firmer savory edge. Pinot Noir fills out the middle palate with additional cherry fruit and smooth texture.
The finish is clean and refreshing, carrying red cherry, raspberry, dried herbs, pepper, and earthy spice. Rather than relying on heavy extraction or obvious new oak, the wine maintains the transparent, food-friendly personality for which classic Arbois reds are known.
What makes Domaine Rolet Arbois Rouge “Tradition” particularly compelling is the combination of three traditional Jura red varieties, red-marl terroir, manual harvesting, separate maturation of each grape, and restrained large-cask aging. It offers a distinctly different red-wine experience from fuller-bodied styles, emphasizing freshness, savory complexity, moderate alcohol, and an unusually versatile combination of fruit, spice, and earth.
The current 2024 vintage is bottled at 12.5% ABV and contains approximately 1.2 g/L residual sugar, placing it firmly in a dry, refreshing style.
Serve slightly cool at approximately 13–15°C / 55–59°F. Domaine Rolet recommends enjoying it throughout a meal, particularly with pork tenderloin, thyme-roasted lamb, or Comté tart. Its bright acidity and savory red-fruit profile also make it an excellent match for charcuterie, roast poultry, mushrooms, grilled pork, and Alpine cheeses.
