Angels Envy Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Tasting Notes

Bourbon, finished where the port wine sleeps.

Nose
Maple syrup, ripe stone fruit, and dark berries. The port shows up as plum and dark chocolate.
Palate
Rich and unctuous. Raisin, baked apple, and butter pecan, with a high-rye kick that keeps it lively.
Finish
Long, soft, fruit-forward. The bourbon bones are there but the port wraps everything in velvet.

About this bottle

Created by Master Distiller Lincoln Henderson, Angel’s Envy is worth coveting. Aged up to 6 years in charred white oak barrels and finished in ruby port wine casks, Angel’s Envy is an artisan’s masterpiece unlike any other bourbon. Even after being named a “Living Legend” by Wine and Spirits Magazine, Lincoln wasn’t content to rest on his laurels. He was always a malcontent. But then, you don’t spend 40 years defining the spirits industry and earn an inaugural spot in the Bourbon Hall of Fame without a few unconventional ideas. Angel’s Envy was his last, great endeavor. Angel’s Envy is what happens when 200 years of tradition meet an independent master craftsman’s instinct to improve. It’s a total return to craft first, hand-blended batches of 8 to 12 barrels at a time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Angel's Envy different from other bourbons?

Angel's Envy is Kentucky straight bourbon finished in ruby port wine barrels from Portugal for an additional three to six months — a technique largely pioneered by the late Lincoln Henderson, the legendary master distiller who also helped create Woodford Reserve. That port finish adds layers of raisin, dark chocolate, and maple syrup on top of the familiar bourbon base, making it one of the most distinctive pours in our bourbon collection.

What does Angel's Envy taste like?

The port finish is the headline. Expect dark caramel, dried fruit (think raisin and fig), vanilla, toasted almond, and a soft red-wine sweetness on the finish. It's noticeably smoother than most standard Kentucky bourbons — 86.6 proof keeps it approachable — and works beautifully for bourbon drinkers looking to step outside the Buffalo Trace / Blanton's style into something with more dessert-wine character.

Is Angel's Envy good for sipping or cocktails?

It's a sipper first. The port finish adds delicate fruit notes that can get lost when the bourbon is mixed with strong modifiers. If you do mix it, reach for a simple highball (Angel's Envy + soda water + orange peel) or a twist on the Old Fashioned using a touch less bitter than you'd add for a standard bourbon. For classic cocktail-focused bourbons, see our Memorial Day 2026 Spirits Guide.

Who owns Angel's Envy now?

Angel's Envy was founded in 2010 by Lincoln Henderson and his son Wes, and acquired by Bacardi in 2015. The Henderson family still runs the distillery in Louisville, where you can visit the production facility on Main Street. For premium Angel's Envy expressions, see the Angel's Envy 2026 Cask Strength Bourbon ($234.99) and the Angel's Envy Rye ($78.99).

How does Angel's Envy compare to other finished bourbons?

Port-finished bourbon is still a relatively rare category — most "finished" bourbons you'll see use toasted French oak or sherry casks. Angel's Envy owns the port space almost completely at this price point. If you enjoy it, the logical upgrade within the brand is the annual Cask Strength release; for lateral moves, Maker's Mark 46 ($44.99) offers a different take on finishing using French oak staves.
