Frequently asked questions about Tanteo Jalapeño Tequila
What is Tanteo Jalapeño Tequila?
Tanteo Jalapeño is a 100% blue agave blanco tequila infused with fresh jalapeño peppers — real peppers macerated into each small batch, not flavoring or extract. It is bottled at 40% ABV and built for one job: making a spicy margarita that tastes like tequila and chile rather than like candy. Browse more agave spirits in our
Tequila collection.
How spicy is it?
Moderately, and pleasantly. The heat arrives after the agave rather than in front of it, sits somewhere around a fresh jalapeño, and fades cleanly instead of building. It is warm rather than punishing — most people who describe themselves as spice-averse are fine with it in a margarita, where lime and orange liqueur soften it further.
What cocktail should I make with it?
The spicy margarita, overwhelmingly: 2 oz Tanteo Jalapeño, 1 oz fresh lime juice, 0.75 oz orange liqueur, 0.25 oz agave nectar, shaken and served over fresh ice with a Tajín-salt rim. It also makes an outstanding spicy Paloma with grapefruit soda, and a very good Bloody Maria. Our
spicy margarita guide has the full method.
Is it better than infusing my own tequila?
It is more consistent, and it is instant. Home-infusing gives you total control but chile infusions overshoot fast — a bottle is perfect at 2–4 hours and inedible at 24. Tanteo is batch-controlled, so every drink tastes the same. If you are making one or two cocktails, muddle fresh chiles instead. If you are serving a crowd, buy the bottle.
Can I drink it neat?
You can, and it is more interesting than you would expect — the agave is clearly present before the heat lands. But it is built as a mixing tequila, and it is not what most people mean by a sipping bottle. If neat tequila is your goal, look at an añejo or extra añejo instead.
What else does Tanteo make?
Two other infusions worth knowing:
Tanteo Habanero Tequila, which is floral and apricot-like before the heat lands and considerably hotter, and
Tanteo Chipotle Tequila, which uses smoked jalapeños for a smoky, barbecue-adjacent drink closer in spirit to a mezcal margarita.
