Learn MorePuntscheit Kerner Südtirol Alto Adige DOC Cantina Bozen is a vibrant, high-altitude white wine from the steep slopes of Valle Isarco and Renon in Alto Adige, northern Italy. The current 2025 vintage is produced from 100% Kerner, a crossing of Schiava Grossa and Riesling, grown at approximately 600–800 meters above sea level on light, gravelly and sandy soils. Fermented and matured entirely in stainless steel to preserve freshness, it is bottled at 12.5% ABV and delivers peach, apricot, mandarin orange, delicate nutmeg, and floral notes with a dry, juicy palate and refreshing alpine character.
Cantina Bozen, or Kellerei Bozen, produces Puntscheit from Kerner grown on the steep, sun-exposed slopes of the Isarco Valley and Renon, where vineyards rise between approximately 600 and 800 meters above sea level. These elevated sites combine abundant sunlight with cool mountain temperatures, creating favorable conditions for preserving acidity and aromatic intensity as the grapes ripen.
Kerner is a white grape variety created in Weinsberg, Germany around 1930 by crossing Schiava Grossa, also known as Trollinger, with Riesling. It retains some of Riesling’s aromatic intensity and freshness while developing a fuller, rounder palate and distinctive spice. Cantina Bozen notes that the variety performs particularly well on light, gravelly and sandy soils at higher elevations, conditions found in the middle Isarco Valley.
The grapes for Puntscheit are harvested around the beginning of October, allowing the late-ripening Kerner variety sufficient time to develop its characteristic peach, apricot, citrus, and spice aromas while retaining natural acidity. The fruit is carefully selected before entering the winery.
After harvest, the grapes are gently pressed, and fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks at controlled temperatures. The wine is then matured entirely in stainless steel rather than oak, a deliberate choice that preserves its aromatic purity, fresh fruit, and crisp mountain character.
In the glass, Puntscheit displays a straw-yellow color with green reflections. The nose is intense and aromatic, opening with peach, apricot, and mandarin orange, followed by a distinctive light spice reminiscent of nutmeg. The combination gives the wine a profile that is both fruit-forward and gently exotic without becoming overly perfumed.
The palate is dry, full-flavored, juicy, and fresh, with ripe stone fruit supported by citrus brightness and a subtle savory quality. Despite the wine’s aromatic character, its mountain-grown acidity keeps the palate precise and refreshing rather than sweet or heavy.
The finish is clean and lively, carrying peach, apricot, mandarin, subtle spice, and fresh mineral-saline notes. The stainless-steel maturation helps maintain clarity and energy through the finish, allowing the high-altitude character of the fruit to remain prominent.
What makes Cantina Bozen Puntscheit Kerner particularly compelling is the combination of 100% Kerner, vineyards at 600–800 meters elevation, steep alpine slopes, light gravelly and sandy soils, late harvesting, and completely unoaked stainless-steel vinification. The result is a distinctive Alto Adige white that combines aromatic richness with mountain freshness, making it both expressive on its own and highly versatile at the table.
The current 2025 vintage is bottled at 12.5% ABV with approximately 3.5 g/L residual sugar, although the producer notes that analytical values can vary slightly by vintage. The 2023 vintage received 90 points from Wine Enthusiast, which highlighted its floral aromatics, herbs, vibrant lime and lemon character, and crisp high-altitude personality.
Serve chilled at approximately 46–54°F / 8–12°C. Cantina Bozen recommends Puntscheit with light appetizers, cured meats, egg dishes, mushrooms, freshwater fish, and steamed seafood, while its aromatic freshness also makes it an excellent aperitif.
