Learn MoreDomaine Pierre et Jérôme Coursodon Saint-Joseph Silice is a classically styled Northern Rhône Syrah from the steep granitic hillsides of Saint-Joseph. The current 2024 vintage is produced from 100% Syrah grown on granite and schist soils, then matured for approximately 12 months in French oak barrels and demi-muids. Bottled at approximately 13.5% ABV, it delivers blackberry, cassis, dark cherry, violet, black pepper, spice, and mineral notes with fine tannins, impressive freshness, and the savory character associated with traditional Saint-Joseph.
Domaine Pierre et Jérôme Coursodon is based in Mauves, one of the historic villages at the heart of the Saint-Joseph appellation in France’s Northern Rhône Valley. The Coursodon family has cultivated vines in the region for generations, with Jérôme Coursodon representing the family’s fifth generation of winegrowers.
The fruit for Silice comes from hillside parcels within the traditional Saint-Joseph sector, where Syrah grows on granite and schist-derived soils. These steep, rocky vineyards naturally provide excellent drainage and help produce Syrah with concentration, freshness, floral aromatics, peppery spice, and a distinctive mineral edge.
The 2024 Silice is 100% Syrah. Grapes are harvested and carefully sorted before entering the cellar, where the fruit is destemmed and undergoes a cold pre-fermentation maceration to encourage aromatic and color extraction.
Fermentation takes place in open vats for approximately 15–18 days, with regular pigeage, or punch-downs, used to gently extract color, tannin, and flavor from the skins. This traditional approach allows the wine to develop structure while preserving the freshness and aromatic purity of Syrah.
Following fermentation, Silice is matured for approximately 12 months in French oak barrels and demi-muids. The use of both traditional barrels and larger-format oak provides texture and subtle spice without overwhelming the wine’s fruit, floral character, and granite-driven minerality.
In the glass, the wine displays a deep ruby-red color with violet reflections. The nose opens with ripe blackberry, cassis, dark cherry, and raspberry, followed by classic Northern Rhône notes of violet, cracked black pepper, spice, and subtle wood.
The palate is medium-to-full-bodied, pure, and elegantly structured, with concentrated black fruit carried by lively acidity and fine-grained tannins. Blackberry and cassis are joined by cherry, pepper, violet, savory spice, and a persistent mineral quality that gives the wine freshness and definition.
The finish is long and refined, carrying dark berries, pepper, spice, violet, and stony minerality. The tannins remain fine rather than aggressive, giving Silice enough approachability to enjoy relatively young while retaining the structure needed for further bottle development.
What makes Domaine Coursodon Saint-Joseph Silice particularly compelling is the combination of 100% Northern Rhône Syrah, steep granite and schist vineyards, traditional open-vat fermentation, restrained French-oak aging, and the historic Mauves terroir. It captures the essential qualities of Saint-Joseph—dark fruit, flowers, pepper, freshness, and mineral tension—without relying on excessive extraction or oak.
The 2024 vintage received 91–93 points from Jeb Dunnuck and 90–92 points from Vinous, while the Guide Hachette des Vins awarded it two stars, identifying it as a particularly successful expression of the vintage.
Serve at approximately 60–64°F / 16–18°C. Young bottles can benefit from around 30–60 minutes of air before serving. Pair with roast chicken, duck, lamb chops, grilled beef, sausages, game, mushroom dishes, charcuterie, or aged cheeses.
