Learn MoreBuffalo Trace Bourbon — Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Buffalo Trace so hard to find on retail shelves?
Buffalo Trace Distillery's flagship bourbon is the most-allocated $30-tier bottle in American whiskey. The brand has grown faster than the distillery can age new stock — bourbon needs a minimum of 4 years in barrel for the Buffalo Trace mash bill, and demand has outpaced what the 2020-vintage barrels can supply in 2026. The result: most independent retailers in major metros get small periodic allocations that sell through within hours. Online direct shipping from a warehouse that aggregates allocation across multiple metros is the most reliable way to get a bottle without standing in a line. Browse the rest of the bourbon collection for in-stock alternatives if Buffalo Trace is temporarily out.
What does Buffalo Trace taste like?
Buffalo Trace at 90 proof is the platonic "approachable Kentucky bourbon" — soft caramel and brown sugar on the nose, mid-palate of vanilla and dried apricot, finish of light oak and brown spice. It's not aggressive (the high-rye distillery profile is balanced by the relatively gentle proof), which is why it's the bourbon most often recommended as a starter for someone moving up from Maker's Mark or Bulleit but not yet ready for a 100+ proof barrel-strength bottle.
Buffalo Trace vs. Eagle Rare 10 Year: which should I buy?
Both come from the same Buffalo Trace Distillery using the same mash bill #1. Eagle Rare 10 Year ($49.99) is aged longer (10+ years) and bottled at the same 90 proof, which gives it a darker, more oak-forward profile with deeper caramel notes and more dried-fruit complexity. Buffalo Trace is the everyday-pour version; Eagle Rare is the special-occasion-pour version. If you can get both, drink Buffalo Trace on weeknights and Eagle Rare on Sundays.
Is Buffalo Trace good in cocktails or only for sipping neat?
Both. The 90-proof profile makes it cocktail-flexible without disappearing under mixers — it builds a clean Old Fashioned, a balanced Manhattan, and a solid mint julep. Our Old Fashioned batch guide uses Buffalo Trace as the recommended workhorse for 12-drink pitcher builds. Neat, sip it from a Glencairn with no ice or a few drops of water to open the caramel notes.
Is Buffalo Trace a good Father's Day gift?
Excellent gift. The bottle is instantly recognizable to anyone who's been around the bourbon category, the brown-and-cream label looks gift-worthy on its own, and at $78.99 it sits in the "I noticed you like good bourbon" gift tier without crossing into uncomfortable territory. Pair it with the Father's Day Bourbon Bundle for a more curated gift. Our Father's Day bourbon preview features Buffalo Trace as one of the eight core picks.
