Kleinstein Chardonnay Cantina Bolzano–Kellerei Bozen is a refined, expressive Alto Adige DOC Chardonnay from the steep hillsides above Bolzano in northern Italy. The current 2025 vintage is crafted from 100% Chardonnay grown on warm, steep porphyry slopes of the Renon at approximately 550 meters elevation. Bottled at 13.5% ABV, Kleinstein balances concentrated tropical fruit with freshness, mineral tension, subtle vanilla, and carefully integrated oak, creating a Chardonnay that is generous in texture yet distinctly Alpine in character.

Process & Profile

Kleinstein belongs to Kellerei Bozen’s premium Election collection, a range created from carefully selected vineyard sites where grape variety, soil, exposure, and microclimate work particularly well together. For Kleinstein, Chardonnay is grown on the warm porphyry slopes of the Renon above Bolzano, where elevation provides freshness while the sunny hillside exposure encourages full aromatic ripeness.

The grapes are normally harvested from mid- to late September and undergo gentle pressing. A portion of the wine is fermented and matured on the fine lees in stainless-steel tanks, preserving freshness and pure fruit character. Another portion undergoes both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in barriques, adding greater texture, roundness, vanilla nuance, and complexity.

This combination of stainless steel and barrel fermentation gives Kleinstein a particularly balanced personality. Stainless steel maintains Chardonnay’s bright fruit and mineral freshness, while the barrique-fermented component contributes additional body and a creamy, gently rounded texture without overwhelming the wine with oak.

In the glass, Kleinstein displays a sparkling straw-yellow color with golden reflections. The bouquet is distinctly exotic, opening with pineapple, mango, and honeydew melon, followed by touches of passion fruit, banana, and vanilla. The aromas are ripe and generous while retaining the freshness expected from high-elevation Alto Adige vineyards.

The palate is elegant, fresh, and beautifully balanced, with concentrated tropical fruit supported by well-integrated acidity. Pineapple and melon lead into subtle vanilla and creamy nuances from the barrique component, while a pronounced mineral character provides definition and keeps the wine lively through the mid-palate.

The finish is clean and persistent, leaving lingering tropical fruit, delicate vanilla, fresh acidity, and mineral notes. With approximately 2.1 g/L residual sugar, the wine remains firmly dry while retaining an appealing richness and fullness of texture.

What makes Kleinstein Chardonnay especially compelling is its combination of 100% Chardonnay, high-elevation porphyry terroir, fine-lees maturation, partial barrique fermentation, and Alto Adige freshness. It offers enough richness and tropical fruit to satisfy lovers of fuller Chardonnay while retaining the mineral precision and acidity that distinguish mountain-grown Italian whites.

Serve it well chilled at approximately 10–12°C / 50–54°F. Kellerei Bozen recommends Kleinstein with fish, appetizers, vegetarian dishes, or simply as an aperitif. Its combination of richness and freshness also works beautifully with grilled seafood, risotto, roast poultry, and creamy pasta dishes.
