National Rum Day Is Tomorrow: 8 Two- and Three-Ingredient Rum Drinks You Can Make Tonight (and the Bottle for Each)
National Rum Day is tomorrow — Sunday, August 16, 2026. If you have spent the last two weeks reading about Zombies and Queen's Park Swizzles and quietly deciding that celebrating rum requires a blender, six syrups and a bag of crushed ice, this guide is the correction. The best rum drinks in the world are also the simplest ones. A daiquiri is three ingredients. A Dark 'n' Stormy is two. A Ti' Punch is arguably one-and-a-half.
So here is the Rum-Day-eve version of the story: eight drinks, none of them more than three ingredients, each matched to one bottle from our shelves that makes it work. Buy one bottle tonight and you can pour four of these. Buy two and you can pour all eight. Everything below links to the live listing with today's price — and if you are shopping ahead for next weekend rather than tonight, the whole rum collection is the place to start.
The 8 bottles in this guide
The rule: three ingredients, no syrups you have to make
Every recipe below obeys three constraints. It uses three ingredients or fewer counting the rum. It needs nothing you have to cook, infuse or order — sugar, limes, ginger beer and cola all count as pantry items. And it works in a glass you already own; a rocks glass and a highball cover all eight.
The only technique worth learning tonight is the one every bartender leans on: taste before you pour the second one. Limes vary wildly in acidity, ginger beers vary wildly in sugar, and rum varies most of all. Two of these drinks are the same recipe with a different bottle in it, and they taste like different cocktails. That is the whole point of Rum Day.
1. The Daiquiri — 2 oz white rum, 1 oz lime, 0.75 oz sugar
The correct answer to "what should I make tonight" is almost always a daiquiri. Shake it hard with ice, strain into a chilled coupe, drink it cold enough to hurt. The bottle: Cruzan Rum Light ($14.99), which is the honest, unfussy Virgin Islands white rum this drink was built for — clean, faintly grassy, and cheap enough that you will actually make a second round.
If you want to spend up, The Real Mccoy Rum 3 Years Old ($24.99) is a three-year Barbadian white with a little more oak underneath, and it makes a daiquiri that tastes like it came from a bar. We wrote the long version of this recipe in our National Daiquiri Day guide — but you do not need it. Two, one, three-quarters. Shake. Done.
2. The Cuba Libre — 2 oz gold rum, cola, half a lime
Rum and Coke becomes a Cuba Libre the moment you squeeze the lime in and drop the shell in the glass. That is not a joke; the oils from the peel are most of the difference. Build it in a highball over plenty of ice.
The bottle: Appleton Rum Estate Signature Blend ($25.99). Jamaican pot-still character means orange peel and a whisper of banana, which is exactly the aromatic lift that plain cola flattens out of a neutral rum. Full method in our Cuba Libre guide.
3. The Dark 'n' Stormy — 2 oz black rum, ginger beer
Two ingredients. Fill a highball with ice, pour in ginger beer, float the rum on top so it bleeds down through the glass in dark ribbons. Do not stir it — the layering is the drink.
The bottle is not negotiable if you want to call it by name: Gosling Rum Black Seal Dark Rum Bermuda ($27.99). Gosling's holds the trademark, and its molasses-heavy, faintly burnt-sugar profile is what the recipe assumes. Myers Rum Original Dark ($32.99) is the closest substitute if you already have it open. Detail and history in our Dark 'n' Stormy guide.
4. The Rum Buck — 2 oz gold rum, ginger beer, lime
The Dark 'n' Stormy's lighter cousin, and the single most forgiving drink on this list. Same build, but with a gold rum and a squeeze of lime it drinks less like dessert and more like a long summer highball you can nurse for an hour.
The bottle: Mount Gay Rum Eclipse ($29.09). Barbadian, column-and-pot blended, with a soft vanilla-and-almond thing going on that ginger beer sharpens beautifully. It is also the most versatile bottle on this page — it will do numbers 2, 4 and 8 without complaint.
5. The Ti' Punch — 2 oz rhum agricole blanc, cane syrup, lime disc
Martinique's national drink, and the most "one ingredient" cocktail here. Cut a coin of lime peel-and-all, drop it in a small glass with a bar spoon of cane syrup, add the rhum, stir, and add one ice cube if you feel like it. Locals say chacun prépare sa propre mort — each prepares his own death — because everyone builds it to their own ratio.
The bottle has to be agricole, not molasses rum: Clement Rhum Rum Estate Bottled Premium White ($34.99). Pressed from fresh cane juice rather than molasses, it is grassy, briny and completely unlike anything else on this list. If that distinction is new to you, we broke it down yesterday in Rhum Agricole vs. Molasses Rum, Explained, and the full recipe lives in our Ti' Punch guide.
6. The Rum Sour — 2 oz aged rum, 0.75 oz lime, 0.5 oz sugar
A daiquiri with the training wheels off: same shape, but built on an aged rum so the oak, dried fruit and toffee sit under the citrus instead of hiding behind it. Shake, strain over one big cube, and skip the egg white unless you are feeling ambitious.
The bottle: Flor De Cana Rum 7 Years Old Grand Reserva ($32.99). Seven years in Nicaraguan oak gives you vanilla and toasted almond at a price that does not sting when you use it in a shaker. This is the drink to make if you want to taste what aging actually does — pour a half-ounce of it neat alongside the finished sour and the comparison teaches you more than any tasting note.
7. The Rum Old Fashioned — 2 oz aged rum, sugar, 2 dashes bitters
Sugar and Angostura Bitters 4oz ($12.99) in the bottom of a rocks glass, a splash of water, stir until dissolved, add the rum and a large cube, stir again for twenty seconds, orange twist over the top. It is a whiskey drinker's entry point into rum and it converts people.
The bottle: Diplomatico Rum Reserva Exclusiva ($39.99). Venezuelan, rich, unapologetically dessert-leaning — which is why it needs the bitters to keep it honest. If you prefer drier, Brugal 1888 Rum ($47.09) is the Dominican counterweight. Long version in our Rum Old Fashioned guide.
8. Overproof Rum Punch — 1 oz overproof, 2 oz citrus, sugar to taste
The one drink here where less rum is more. Jamaican overproof is 63% ABV, so a single ounce does the work of two, and the funk — that hogo, ester-driven, overripe-banana character — carries through juice that would drown a lighter rum. Build over crushed ice, stir, taste, adjust.
The bottle: Wray & Nephew Rum ($32.99). Treat it with respect, measure it properly, and never pour it neat on a whim. We covered the category in Overproof & 151 Rum, Explained, and the punch tradition it comes from in our Planter's Punch guide.
If you are only buying one bottle
Buy the gold rum. Mount Gay Eclipse covers the Cuba Libre, the Rum Buck and a passable sour, and it is pleasant enough neat that the bottle will not sit unopened after tomorrow. Buy two and make the second one white — Cruzan Light — because a daiquiri is the drink you will keep coming back to long after Rum Day is over.
And if you are reading this on Sunday with nothing in the cabinet: rum's whole history is improvisation. Rum, lime, sugar. That is the drink. Everything else on this page is a variation on it.
