Christmas Rum Gifts 2026: 8 Rums by Budget — From a Smooth 7 Year Sipper to Demerara 114 Proof, From $27.99

Oct 20, 2026
Unlabeled aged rum bottles with a rocks glass and large ice cube, cinnamon, dried orange slices and wrapped gifts on dark oak

Rum is the most overlooked Christmas gift in the liquor store, and that is a reason to give it. A good aged rum has the sweetness and oak of a bourbon or a cognac, usually for less money, and almost nobody on your list will have the same bottle already. The trick is to choose by style: a spiced rum for the mixer, a smooth Latin American sipper for the whiskey drinker and a funky Jamaican or Demerara rum for the enthusiast. Below are eight rums in stock today, ordered by price, with who each one suits. All prices are live.

The 8 rums in this guide

Under $50: a spiced rum and five sippers

Ron Abuelo Añejo 7 Anos ($27.99) is the value pick. It is a Panamanian rum aged seven years, soft and lightly sweet, with vanilla, dried fruit and a little oak. It is the one to give someone who has never tried a sipping rum, and it is priced low enough for a host gift or a stocking stuffer. For a different kind of gift, Kraken Black Spiced Rum ($29.99) is a dark, spiced rum at 94 proof, built for cola and ginger beer rather than for sipping. Give it to the person who mixes drinks for friends.

Diplomático Reserva Exclusiva ($39.99) is the rum that wins over bourbon drinkers. It is a Venezuelan rum that is rich and sweet, with brown sugar, orange peel, chocolate and vanilla, and it is easy to sip neat or over a large ice cube. Bacardi Reserva Ocho ($43.99) is aged for at least eight years and is drier and more polished, with toasted oak, dried apricot and a little spice. It is the better gift for a person who likes brandy or a lighter whiskey. Our rum Old Fashioned recipe works well with either.

Santa Teresa 1796 ($47.99) is a Venezuelan solera-aged rum, which means that rums of different ages are blended through a stack of barrels, and the result is smooth, with caramel, tobacco and dried fruit. Appleton Estate Reserve 8 Year ($48.99) is the Jamaican choice. It is a blend of pot- and column-still rums aged at least eight years, with orange peel, nutmeg, toffee and the fruity, slightly funky character that Jamaican rum is known for. It is the best choice here for a cocktail enthusiast, and it is wonderful in a Daiquiri or an Old Fashioned.

$50 and up: an old Costa Rican and a Demerara heavyweight

Ron Centenario 20 Year Fundación ($64.99) is a Costa Rican solera blend labeled 20 years and is the smooth, sweet gift for a cognac drinker, with toffee, raisin, cocoa and oak. It looks and tastes like a much more expensive bottle. If you are shopping for a brandy lover, see also our holiday cognac gift guide.

El Dorado High Ester Blend LBI/DHE Demerara Rum ($139.99) is the enthusiast’s bottle. It is a high-ester Demerara rum from Guyana at 114 proof, and it is dark, intense and funky, with overripe banana, molasses and strong oak. It is not a casual gift; give it to someone who already owns three or four aged rums and wants something bold. Add a little water, or use it as the base for a tiki drink where a standard rum would disappear.

How to pick the right rum

If you do not know what the person likes, Diplomático Reserva Exclusiva is the safest sipping rum, because it is sweet and rich and tastes expensive. If they drink bourbon, choose Diplomático or Ron Abuelo 7. If they drink brandy or Scotch, choose Bacardi Ocho or Centenario 20. If they make cocktails, choose Appleton 8 or Kraken. If they love bold flavors, choose El Dorado. Our aged rum gift guide has eight more sipping rums if you need to widen the field.

Reading a rum label

Rum labels are less regulated than Scotch or bourbon labels, so an age statement can mean different things. In a solera system, as used by Santa Teresa and Centenario, the age on the label is often the average or the oldest part of a blend rather than the youngest rum in the bottle. In Jamaica, the age on Appleton is the youngest rum in the blend. Some rums also have added sugar, which makes them taste sweeter, and sweetness is not a flaw, but it is a reason to taste before you assume that older means better.

A simple holiday rum drink

If you want to pour something the day you give the bottle, make a rum Old Fashioned: two ounces of Appleton 8 or Bacardi Ocho, a teaspoon of demerara syrup, two dashes of Angostura bitters and a wide strip of orange peel, stirred over a large cube. It tastes like a winter drink, it takes two minutes and it shows a whiskey drinker how well aged rum fits into a familiar cocktail. For a larger group, scale it up in a bottle and chill it before guests arrive.

Serving and gifting

Serve an aged rum neat in a tulip glass or over one large cube, and keep the cola for the spiced bottle. A good gift set is a bottle of rum, a jar of cocktail cherries and a few dried orange slices. Browse our gift bags for wrapping, and if the recipient also drinks whiskey, our Christmas bourbon and whiskey gift guide and Christmas Scotch gift guide cover the rest of the list.
