From Suntory’s mountain distillery, Hakushu 12 Year Single Malt Whisky is the herbal and gently smoky single malt. Its crisp and vibrant feel, unique in a single malt, enlivens and liberates your senses. Bright yet lightly smoky with the scent of basil, pine needles, and green apple, this champagne gold single-malt delivers notes of sweet pear, mint, and kiwi on the palate. With a woody finish, this Japanese whisky takes your palate back to earth with green tea and subtle smoke. Straight from the untouched forests, mountains and pure waters of the Southern Japanese Alps, Hakushu's crisp and vibrant feel, unique in a single malt whisky, enlivens and liberates your senses. Savor this whisky neat, on the rocks, or blended with water (Mizuwari). Keizo Saji inherited his father’s vision in his quest for innovation and constructed Hakushu Distillery in 1973, a half century after the first Suntory distillery, in the forests of Mt. Kaikomagatake.148

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Hakushu 12 Year taste like?

Hakushu 12 is Suntory's lightly peated, forest-influenced single malt — citrus, green apple, and fresh herbs over a soft smoke that's much gentler than an Islay Scotch. The Hakushu distillery sits in a forested mountain area north of Tokyo, and the water and altitude both contribute to a profile that's noticeably brighter and more delicate than Yamazaki. Most drinkers describe the finish as "cucumber and pine" — a strange description that ends up being accurate. It's an excellent neat pour and an even better highball.

How does Hakushu 12 compare to Yamazaki 12?

Both are 12-year-old single malts from Suntory, and both are highly allocated. Yamazaki 12 is richer, sweeter, and more sherry-influenced — think dried fruit, oak, and a fuller body. Hakushu 12 is the lighter and greener of the two — peatier, more herbaceous, and built for highballs and lighter food pairings. If you've tried Yamazaki and want a different facet of Japanese single malt, Hakushu is the next bottle. For a structured introduction to the broader category, see our Best Japanese Whiskies guide.

Is Hakushu 12 worth $199?

For a 12-year single malt with this level of complexity, yes — but with caveats. Japanese whisky pricing has decoupled from Scotch pricing over the last decade because demand outstripped supply, and Hakushu 12 is one of the most affected bottles. A Speyside 12-year of comparable quality would cost half as much. That said, Hakushu's flavor profile genuinely has no equivalent in Scotch — the cucumber-pine-light-smoke combination is unique to this distillery — so the premium is for something you can't get cheaper elsewhere. For value-tier Japanese whisky, our Nikka From the Barrel ($79.09) is the better dollar-for-dollar pick. For an entry-tier Japanese whisky tasting, the Japanese Whisky Highball Guide covers the broader lineup.

How should I drink Hakushu 12?

Three modes. Neat in a Glencairn glass for tasting — give it ten minutes to open and you'll get the green-fruit and pine notes that make it distinct. In a Japanese highball (1.5 oz Hakushu, 4 oz cold soda water, large ice column, no garnish) — Hakushu is one of the best whiskies in the world for the highball format and the soda lifts the citrus character. With food — Hakushu pairs unusually well with sushi, grilled white fish, and lighter Japanese cuisine. Save the heavier Islay Scotches for the bigger flavors.

Is Hakushu 12 a good gift?

For a Japanese whisky enthusiast or a Scotch drinker who's never tried Japanese single malt, yes — it's one of the most distinctive and memorable bottles in the category. Pair it with a set of Glencairn glasses for a complete gift. For a less expensive Japanese whisky gift, Nikka From the Barrel ($79.09) is excellent and presents beautifully. For ultra-premium gifting, browse the full Japanese Whiskey collection for Hibiki, Yamazaki, and limited editions.

How long has Hakushu 12 been available, and why is it allocated?

The Hakushu distillery was founded in 1973 and the 12-year expression has been in continuous (if scarce) production for years. Hakushu 12 was briefly discontinued in 2018 due to inventory shortages, then reintroduced in limited quantities in 2021. It remains heavily allocated in the U.S. market and pricing reflects that scarcity. When you find a bottle in stock, it's worth grabbing. We restock irregularly — set up a back-in-stock notification on the product page if it's sold out. The broader whiskey collection covers the rest of the category if you need an in-stock alternative.
