About the Producer

Michter's · Louisville, KY

America's first whiskey company — distilling at the original Bomberger's site in Pennsylvania since 1753. The brand was revived in 2000 and now operates from Louisville's Shively distillery. Michter's 10 Year Single Barrel is allocated nationally; bottlings are individually numbered and selected by master distiller Andrea Wilson.

About this bottle
This is a very well-integrated whiskey with a lovely balance between creamy and spicy. There’s a full, rich, toffee sweetness throughout, balancing the earthy, humus-like bass notes in the mid palate. The finish is also very reminiscent of soda pop (root beer float? Cherry Coke?), almost giving the impression of carbonation, with a lingering muted spiciness. It’s extremely thick and coating. Water cuts that mouth feel, to its detriment.

Michter's 10 Year Single Barrel Bourbon — Frequently Asked Questions

Does Michter's distill its own whiskey?
Today, yes — Michter's operates a distillery in Shively, Louisville, plus the Fort Nelson distillery downtown. Historically the brand built its reputation on sourced barrels selected and finished with real intent, and older stock in the ten-year range reflects that transition. Neither is a knock: barrel selection and maturation management are craft in their own right. Our guide to sourced vs. distilled bourbon explains how to read the distinction off any back label.
What does single barrel mean here?
Every bottle comes from one individual barrel rather than a blend of many, so no two bottles are identical. That is the appeal and the risk — you get a specific barrel's character rather than a house average smoothed out by blending. Our single barrel vs. small batch guide covers what actually changes in the glass.
Why is Michter's 10 Year so expensive?
Three reasons, none of them marketing. Ten-year-old bourbon is genuinely scarce because it was distilled a decade before anyone knew demand would be this high. Michter's bottles it as single barrel, which caps volume per release. And the brand runs a low barrel-entry proof, which means less water added at bottling and more original distillate per bottle — an expensive way to make whiskey.
What does it taste like?
Dense and confectionary rather than hot. Expect butterscotch, dark honey, toasted almond and a leathery, well-integrated oak note that only long maturation gives. At 94.4 proof it is remarkably drinkable for its age. This is a neat-pour bottle; putting it in a cocktail is not a crime but it is a waste.
Is it allocated?
Yes. Michter's 10 Year Single Barrel is released in limited quantities and disappears from most shelves quickly, particularly during the autumn release season. We keep it in the Fall Allocation Showcase with the rest of the allocated and limited-run bottles we have in hand at a listed price.
What should I compare it to?
Michter's Bourbon Whiskey Small Batch US*1 ($54.09) is the everyday Michter's and the honest baseline for what the house style tastes like without the age. On the other side, Blanton's Original Single Barrel Bourbon Whiskey ($119.99) is the other famous single barrel bourbon, built on a completely different low-rye Buffalo Trace mash bill. Both in the Bourbon collection.
