While Jose Cuervo isn’t necessarily known as a player in the luxury tequila, this expression says otherwise. Unlike its Tradicional, Silver, Gold, and other generic, over-the-counter variants, this Reserva De La Familia Extra Anejo is crafted from the finest blue weber agave found in the distillery’s reserves and aged to perfection. It is a sweet sipping tequila that can be enjoyed year round! And, yes, we would even dare to say that this is a better sipper than something like a Clase Azul Reposado or a Avion Reserva 44 Extra Anejo.
History of Jose Cuervo Reserva De La Familia:
Made natively by the Cuervo Family, the Reserva expression, albeit new, inherits the 4 generations or 200 years of tradition in tequila production. It is produced from the family’s reserves that have been stored and aged in a private cellar for years in small batches, following artisanal practices. The result is an incredibly smooth and rich tequila with complex notes and a perfected flavor profile.
How is Jose Cuervo Reserva De La Familia Made?
Jose Cuervo takes utmost care in producing their ultra premium tequila. The process starts about 10 years prior to when the nectar hits the glass, with blue weber agave planting seasons. Only this variant of agave is used in the tequila out of over 200 other agave types (often cheaper and produced at scale) to ensure the consistent and highest quality of tequila. During harvesting season, only the most flavor-dense center portion of the agave will be distilled for the Reserva tequila.
It is taken to Jose Cuervo’s distillery in La Rojena to be cooked in traditional stills for a total of 48 hours. As an extra anejo tequila, the end distillate from the agave stills is filtered and taken to French and American Oak barrels to age for up to 4 years. The liquids are then masterfully blended by Alex Coronado, Jose Cuervo’s Master Distiller.
How does Jose Cuervo Reserva de La Familia taste?
Nose: It offers aromas of sweet agave, cinnamon, and warm spices
Palate: Tropical fruit hits the tongue first, followed by a sweeping marriage of agave, cinnamon and vanilla. The spice and oak mingle well, from the start all the way to a lengthy and rich finish.
What is the story behind the Jose Cuervo Reserva De La Familia Packaging?
Jose Cuervo is a passionate supporter of its local communities in Mexico. Each bottle of the Reserva de La Familia line is hand bottled, labeled, dipped in wax, and given a Cuervo Family Crest. Cuervo also annually commissions the artwork for its collectors box to a local artist. In 2020, Jorge Pardo was the selected artists and went on to create a beautiful rosemary colored design that tells the story of jimadors laboring in agave fields. According to Jose Cuervo, “it explores the experience of farmers and how they know what agave to select in order to produce the best tequila.”
How much is Jose Cuervo Reserva De La Familia?
Like most other extra anejo tequilas on the market, Cuervo Reserva De La Familia is not an everyday drink. Its price is in the $140 - $200 range, with the best price nationwide being offered here. While the flagship brand is known primarily for its Extra Anejo variant, Cuervo did celebrate its 25th anniversary in late 2020 by relaunching the Reserva de la Familia Platino in the US market and by debuting the Reserva de la Familia Reposado.
