This is a pretty consistent bourbon across the board when it comes to flavor profile. The nose, palate, and finish all are very pleasing and this bourbon delivers a great sip from start to finish. The Gold Edition is a slightly spunkier version of Blanton’s Original Single Barrel in the sense that it offers the same great nose, a little drier mouthfeel, and a little more burn in the finish. Additionally, the Gold Edition is a really fun opportunity to taste a higher proof version of a beloved single barrel that you won’t often get the opportunity to have, however it comes with a hefty price tag. I actually prefer the Gold Edition over the Original version, and it’s a shame that this isn’t sold in the U.S. at slightly higher price than Blanton’s Original Single Barrel. If it were, I could see this being popular as many Blanton’s fans would gladly pay for the opportunity to try a slightly “grown-up” version of a beloved bourbon. That being said I’m not sure how many would go back for a second bottle due to the fact that while it’s slightly better, I’d be willing to bet many would be hard pressed to pick one bottle of Gold over almost two bottles of Blanton’s Original Single Barrel.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0352/3140/0072/files/blantons-bourbon-special-reserve-gold-label-675420.jpg?v=1743260379
blantons-bourbon-special-reserve-red-label
Blanton's Bourbon Special Reserve Red Label

This is a variant of Blanton's (sometimes called "Blanton's Red") that is released for the Japanese market. The brand has grown faster than the distillery can age new stock — bourbon needs a minimum of 4 years in barrel for the Buffalo Trace mash bill, and demand has outpaced what the 2020-vintage barrels can supply in 2026. Smith Bowman Distillery A. Smith Bowman’s distilling roots date back to the years before prohibition, in Algiers, Louisiana. In 1935, after the Repeal of Prohibition, Abram Smith Bowman and his sons relocated to Virginia continuing the family tradition with the distillation of bourbon. The original distillery was located on the Bowman family homestead in Fairfax County, Virginia called Sunset Hills Farm. The distillery’s hallmark bourbon called Virginia Gentleman was first created in small-batches to ensure meticulous control over the quality of each bottle. In response to the rapid growth of Northern Virginia, the distillery was moved in 1988 and is now nestled in the historic city of Fredericksburg in Spotsylvania County, 60 miles away from the original location. The Distillery Today As a small and privately owned company, The A. Smith Bowman Distillery continues the time-honored traditions on which it was founded. Considered a micro-distillery by today’s standards, A.
